How it works

How to make a text QR code

  1. 1

    Type your text

Up to 1,000 characters, but shorter is better: every character adds detail to the code.

  2. 2

    Check the size

Long texts make dense codes. Print them larger, or keep the message to a few lines.

  3. 3

    Download and test

Scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone to check the text appears in full.

Generated entirely in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded.

What a text QR code is good for

A text code holds the words themselves, not a link. That means it works anywhere: in a basement, on a plane, in a field, or anywhere without signal. Nothing is tracked, and the code never stops working because a website went offline.

It suits short, fixed information: assembly or safety instructions, serial and batch numbers, a clue in a treasure hunt, a message in a gift, or a label in a warehouse.

How long can the text be?

A QR code can technically hold a few thousand characters, but the more you store, the denser and harder to scan it gets. Up to about 300 characters prints comfortably at a normal size. For longer or formatted text, a dynamic code that opens a mobile page is easier to read and can be edited later.

Use cases

Ways to use text QR codes

  • Product labels

Serial numbers, batch codes and care instructions on the product.

  • Warehouses and inventory

Shelf and box labels that scanners and phones can read.

  • Places without signal

Instructions on machines, in basements and outdoors.

  • Classrooms

Answers, hints and vocabulary on worksheets and posters.

  • Treasure hunts and games

Clues that only appear when someone scans.

  • Trails and exhibits

Short descriptions next to plants, objects and artworks.

Best practices

Tips for text QR codes

  • Keep it short

A few lines scan easily at 2–3 cm. Long text needs a bigger code.

  • Avoid secrets

Anyone who scans the code can read the text. Don’t store passwords or personal data.

  • Use plain characters

Emoji and special characters work on most phones but make the code denser.

  • Add a label

“Scan for instructions” tells people what they will get.

Static or dynamic?

Need to update the text? Go dynamic

A static text code can never change: fix a typo and you reprint. A dynamic code opens a mobile page you can edit anytime, with room for longer, formatted text, and counts every scan. It needs an internet connection to open.

  • Editable text pages with a dynamic code

FAQ

Text QR code questions

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, and static codes never expire.

No. The text is stored in the code itself, so the phone reads it without a connection.

This generator allows up to 1,000 characters. Under about 300 characters is best for codes printed at normal sizes.

Not with a static code. A dynamic QR-10 code opens a text page you can edit anytime.

Text you can still change after printing.
